What is the Laidback Breastfeeding Position?
There are several different breastfeeding positions for you and your baby such as cradle hold, cross-cradle hold, football hold, and side-lying position. The laidback breastfeeding position is more of an instinctive feeding position for newborns. It supports a relaxed feeding experience for both mom and baby when comfort, bonding, and stability takes place as baby feeds.
Laidback breastfeeding begins with the mother lying back reclined or in a semi reclined position, so that she is comfortable for the feeding. Beginning with some skin-to-skin time will often help ensure that baby is calm and stable on mom before offering the breast for a feeding. Once early signs of hunger are visible, it’s time to place your baby head over the breast to offer a feeding.
What makes the laidback breastfeeding position different?
- The latch process is completely different compared to other positions because baby takes the lead. Mom just supports baby’s body with her arm or a hand on baby’s bottom for a little extra stability.
- Gravity plays a big role with the latch by naturally drawing baby’s tongue passed the gums for suckling. It also encourages the jaw to remain wide open and relaxed.
- For mom’s who experience a forceful milk flow, laidback breastfeeding provides improved feeding management. Baby’s position being stable over the breast and the milk flowing against gravity, seem to be key aids for baby’s control of a forceful milk flow.
- The baby may actively use both hands to help with milk flow stimulation by gently pushing against the breast while feeding.
