What are heavy metals?
Heavy metals are naturally present in the environment. When it comes to food, heavy metals most
commonly refer to the elements lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic. As fruits, vegetables, and
grains grow, they can absorb these elements from the soil and water. This is true whether you
grow foods in your own garden, buy organic at a farmer’s market, or buy packaged foods at the
grocery store.
Are heavy metals added to baby food during the manufacturing process?
No—they’re not. Fruits, vegetables, and grains can absorb heavy metals from the soil as they
take in the nutrients they use to grow. When we make our baby food, we not only use high-quality
ingredients but also stainless steel equipment, which doesn’t add any heavy metals to our foods.

Is homemade baby food safer?
Making baby food at home (or feeding your baby what you eat) won’t reduce your little one’s
exposure to heavy metals in food. Heavy metals are commonly found in the environment and can be
absorbed in trace amounts by some fruits, vegetables, and grains during the growing process.
